Do automatic watches need batteries?
No. Automatic (self-winding) watches do not use batteries. They are mechanical: an oscillating rotor inside the watch winds the mainspring from the motion of your wrist, storing energy that drives the movement.
How self-winding works
A weighted rotor spins with your wrist movements and, through a gear train, winds the mainspring. The mainspring stores that energy and releases it steadily to the balance wheel, which oscillates — commonly at 28,800 vph (8 beats per second) — to keep time. No electronics, no cell.
When fully wound, an automatic holds a power reserve — commonly 38 to 80+ hours — so it keeps running for a day or more after you take it off. Extended-reserve movements like the Powermatic 80 and Hamilton H-10 reach about 80 hours.
What to do when it stops
If an automatic sits unworn past its power reserve it simply stops and needs restarting — a few manual winds via the crown, then setting the time. It has lost no accuracy; it has just run out of stored energy. A watch winder can keep one running between wears, though it is not required.
Do not confuse automatics with quartz watches, which do use a battery (typically lasting 2–5 years), or with light-powered quartz like Eco-Drive and Seiko solar, which recharge from light and never need a battery change.
