What's the difference between quartz and mechanical watches?

A quartz watch is electronic: a battery powers a vibrating quartz crystal that a circuit divides down into precise seconds. A mechanical watch is purely mechanical: a wound mainspring drives a gear train and a balance wheel, with no battery or electronics anywhere in it.

Two different engines

Quartz movements use a tiny battery to vibrate a quartz crystal at exactly 32,768 times per second; a circuit counts those vibrations down to move the hands (or drive a digital display) once per second. It is cheap to make, hard to disturb, and needs almost no attention beyond a battery change every few years.

Mechanical movements store energy in a coiled mainspring, wound either by hand or by an oscillating rotor (automatic/self-winding), and release it through a gear train to a balance wheel that ticks back and forth, commonly 28,800 times per hour. Every second hand "sweep" you see on a mechanical watch is really that ticking, just fast enough to look smooth.

Quartz wins on accuracy and low maintenance: it drifts only seconds per month and just sits in a drawer indefinitely without stopping. Mechanical watches drift seconds per day, need periodic winding or wrist motion, and need a full service roughly every 5–7 years — but they never need a battery and can run for generations.

Beginners often start with a battery quartz watch (like a simple solar or standard quartz field watch) because it is forgiving, then move toward automatics once they want to feel the craft rather than just tell time.
