Blancpain · Air Command · AC01 · 500 pieces · on Amazon

The pilot chronograph Blancpain almost never made.

In the 1950s Blancpain built a flyback chronograph for a US Air Force contract that never came through, and a dozen or so Air Commands reached the world through a Philadelphia distributor; they are among the rarest Blancpains. In 2019 the company re-issued it: 42.5mm steel, a black ceramic countdown bezel, a black dial with sand-coloured numerals and a tachymeter, and the calibre F388B flyback beating at 36,000 an hour with a column wheel and vertical clutch. Five hundred were made. Sold on Amazon by an independent dealer; the listing says it ships in four to five weeks.

The original, and the re-issue

The Air Command is the Blancpain that collectors argue about: a 1950s flyback chronograph with a countdown bezel, built to a US Air Force specification for a contract Blancpain did not win, and sold in tiny numbers through Allen Tornek, the American distributor who also handled the Fifty Fathoms. Perhaps a dozen originals are known. When one surfaces it sells for more than most new Blancpains.

The 2019 re-issue keeps the look, the countdown bezel and the flyback, and puts a modern high-beat movement inside: the F388B runs at 36,000 vibrations an hour, so the chronograph seconds hand reads to a tenth, with a column wheel and vertical clutch for a clean start and a silicon balance spring. Blancpain made 500.

Reading the listing

The title gives the full reference, AC01 1130 63A, which is the 2019 steel limited edition. The Amazon rows say bracelet; the photograph shows the brown calf strap with cream stitching that the edition shipped on, so read the photograph. The buy box says the watch ships in four to five weeks rather than the dealer’s usual few days, which for a sold-out limited edition usually means it is being sourced rather than sitting on a shelf; ask whether it is new and numbered, and for the box and papers.

Every figure here comes from the listing and from Blancpain’s published description of the AC01, not from handling the watch.

Buying it on Amazon

This is a regular Amazon listing from an independent dealer, Luxor Watches on the day we read it, with Amazon’s 30-day return window; it is not a Luxury Stores pre-owned unit. The second button opens the live search for Air Commands in case this one has sold.

Sold-out limited Blancpains have resold close to what people paid for them and sometimes above, sometimes below; that is a pattern, not a promise, and nothing here is investment advice.

Verdict

One of 500 Air Command re-issues, on Amazon from a dealer: the rarest chronograph on this page, with a high-beat flyback movement and a story collectors know.

Strengths

  • Flyback chronograph with a 36,000 vph column-wheel movement
  • Limited to 500; the 2019 edition sold out at retail
  • Countdown ceramic bezel and 1950s dial in a wearable 42.5mm
  • Amazon’s return window on a dealer listing

Trade-offs

  • Ships in 4 to 5 weeks; being sourced, so ask what arrives
  • Condition, numbering and papers not stated; ask
  • 30 metres; a pilot watch, not a dive watch
  • Rows say bracelet; it is on a strap
