Blancpain · Fifty Fathoms · Bathyscaphe · flyback chronograph · steel · NATO · on Amazon

The flyback dive chronograph, in steel on a NATO.

Blancpain’s Bathyscaphe Chronographe Flyback is a dive watch that happens to be a column-wheel chronograph: 300 metres, pushers built for it, a vertical clutch so the seconds hand starts clean, and a flyback so one press resets and restarts the timer. This one is the steel case with a black ceramic bezel, the meteor grey sunburst dial with luminous dots and three counters, a date at half past four, on a black nylon NATO strap. The dealer’s listing says 30 metres; Blancpain says 300 and the page explains. Sold on Amazon by an independent dealer.

What the F385 does

Three things make the F385 more than a chronograph module bolted to a dive watch. A column wheel gives the pushers an even, mechanical feel. A vertical clutch means the chronograph seconds hand starts without the small stutter a horizontal clutch produces. And flyback means that with the timer running, one press zeroes and restarts it in the same motion, which is what a diver timing consecutive stops needs. It runs about 50 hours and uses a silicon balance spring.

The steel case with the ceramic bezel is the Bathyscaphe formula, and the meteor grey dial is the quieter face compared with the black ceramic version elsewhere on this page. The NATO strap is the dealer’s configuration; Blancpain also ships this reference on canvas and on a bracelet.

Reading the listing

The dealer’s description is short: meteor grey dial, steel case, black nylon NATO, automatic, 30 metres, unidirectional coin-edge bezel, tang clasp, 43 by 14.85mm, reference 5200-1110-NABA. One line is wrong: Blancpain rates every Bathyscaphe Chronographe Flyback at 300 metres, and the 30 is a listing error, the kind that comes from a template. The photograph matches the reference otherwise. The calibre, flyback function and reserve here are Blancpain’s published figures, not the dealer’s.

Whether the watch is new with Blancpain’s warranty is not stated in the rows we read; ask, and ask for the box and papers. Every figure here comes from the listing and from Blancpain’s published description, not from handling the watch.

Buying it on Amazon

This is a regular Amazon listing from an independent dealer, Luxor Watches on the day we read it, with Amazon’s 30-day return window; it is not a Luxury Stores pre-owned unit. The second button opens the live search for Bathyscaphe chronographs in case this one has sold.

Bathyscaphes have resold for under new and close to what pre-owned buyers paid, sometimes more, sometimes less; that is a pattern, not a promise, and nothing here is investment advice.

Verdict

A steel Bathyscaphe flyback chronograph with the grey dial on a NATO, on Amazon from a dealer: the least expensive way onto this page for a 300-metre column-wheel chronograph, with one listing error to ignore.

Strengths

  • Flyback column-wheel chronograph with a vertical clutch, rated to 300 metres
  • Ceramic bezel and a meteor grey dial that reads in any light
  • Steel and a NATO; the cheapest Bathyscaphe chronograph configuration
  • Amazon’s return window on a dealer listing

Trade-offs

  • Dealer listing says 30 metres; it is 300, but ask them to confirm the reference
  • Condition and warranty not stated; ask
  • 43.6mm and nearly 15mm thick
  • NATO strap; a bracelet is extra

Buy it if

Someone who wants a real dive chronograph from the company that invented the dive watch, at the bottom of the Bathyscaphe chronograph range.

Skip it if

You want a bracelet in the box, a thinner watch, or the black ceramic version.

FAQ

No. The dealer’s description says 30 metres, but Blancpain rates the Bathyscaphe Chronographe Flyback 5200 at 300 metres with pushers built for it. The 30 is a listing error; confirm the reference with the dealer.
