Blancpain · Fifty Fathoms · Bathyscaphe · Day Date 70s · steel · on Amazon
The Bathyscaphe with a 1970s tan.
Blancpain made a day-date Bathyscaphe in the early 1970s with a dial that faded from brown to black, and in 2018 it brought the look back as the Bathyscaphe Day Date 70s: a 43mm steel case with a black ceramic bezel, a smoked gradient dial shading from warm grey-brown at the centre to black at the rim, luminous batons, a day and date at three and a red-tipped seconds hand, on a distressed brown calf strap. Inside is the calibre 1315DD with five days of reserve, rated to 300 metres. Made as a limited edition. Sold on Amazon by an independent dealer, who lists it without a reference number.

A dial that fades on purpose
Gradient dials were a 1970s fashion: a lacquer sprayed darker toward the rim so the centre glowed. Blancpain’s original Bathyscaphe day-date of that era had one, and the 70s edition copies it in the modern Bathyscaphe case, with the same rectangular luminous batons, a day and date at three, and a seconds hand with a red tip. The bezel is the current ceramic with Liquidmetal markers, so the retro look is on the dial only.
The 1315DD is the Bathyscaphe’s five-day automatic with a day-date module and a silicon balance spring, and the 300-metre rating is the same as the plain Bathyscaphe. The strap is a distressed calf leather rather than the usual sail canvas, which is the other 1970s cue and the reason the watch reads as a weekend watch rather than a diver.

Reading the listing
The listing is a title and a photograph: Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe Day Date 70’s Watch. The Amazon rows carry no model number and no specs, and there is no description. The photograph shows the watch the title names, steel with a black ceramic bezel, a smoked gradient dial, a day-date at three and a brown calf strap. The case size, calibre, reserve, water resistance and limited-edition status here are Blancpain’s published figures for the 70s edition, not the dealer’s; the edition number is not on the listing and we do not state one.
Ask the dealer for the full reference, whether the watch is new with Blancpain’s warranty, and for the box and papers. Every figure here comes from the listing and from Blancpain’s published description, not from handling the watch.

Buying it on Amazon
This is a regular Amazon listing from an independent dealer, Luxor Watches on the day we read it, with Amazon’s 30-day return window; it is not a Luxury Stores pre-owned unit. The second button opens the live search for Bathyscaphe 70s in case this one has sold.
Limited Bathyscaphes have resold for under new and close to what pre-owned buyers paid, sometimes more, sometimes less; that is a pattern, not a promise, and nothing here is investment advice.

Verdict
A steel Bathyscaphe Day Date 70s on Amazon from a dealer: the retro gradient dial on a five-day, 300-metre Blancpain, with a reference number to get in writing first.
Strengths
- Smoked gradient dial and calf strap; the 1970s look on a modern diver
- Calibre 1315DD: five days of reserve, day and date, silicon balance spring
- Ceramic bezel, 300 metres; a real Bathyscaphe under the dress
- Amazon’s return window on a dealer listing
Trade-offs
- No reference number or edition number on the listing; ask
- Condition and warranty not stated; ask
- Calf strap is not for the water; swap to rubber to dive
- 43mm; a big watch
