Illustrative render — hero view of the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Automatique 5015-12B40-O52A (steel, blue dial, blue sail-canvas strap)

Blancpain · Fifty Fathoms · Automatique · steel · blue · on Amazon

The Fifty Fathoms, in the colour of the water.

The 45mm Fifty Fathoms Automatique with the blue sapphire bezel and blue sunburst dial is the version Blancpain photographs most, and it is the one that reads as a sea watch rather than a military one: the oversized luminous numerals from 1953, the domed sapphire bezel with the scale under the crystal, a date at half past four, and the calibre 1315 with five days of reserve inside, rated to 300 metres, on a blue sail-canvas strap. The listing’s model row carries a NATO suffix while the title and photograph show canvas; the page says to ask. Sold on Amazon by a marketplace seller shipping from Japan, one unit listed.

Blue on the Fifty Fathoms

The 1953 original was black, because a black dial with luminous markers is what a diver reads in murky water. Blancpain added the blue when it revived the line, and the blue is the same dial and bezel construction in a different colour: a sunburst dial that goes from bright to navy as the light moves, and a sapphire bezel insert that reads as a glass ring rather than a painted one. The luminous numerals and darts are the same cream on both.

Underneath is the 1315, three barrels for five days of reserve and a silicon balance spring, and the 300-metre case with its screw-down crown. The sail-canvas strap is the strap the revival launched on; the model row’s NATO suffix means the seller may ship the nylon version instead, which is the question to ask.

Reading the listing

The listing is a title and a model number, and they do not quite agree. The title says Fifty Fathoms Automatic Blue Dial 5015-12B40-O52A, the canvas strap reference, and the photograph shows canvas. The model row says 5015-12B40-NAOA, the NATO strap reference. Same watch, same dial, different strap; ask the seller which one is in the box. There are no other spec rows and no description. The case size, calibre, reserve and water resistance here are Blancpain’s published figures, not the seller’s.

The seller is MS-TR JAPAN, a marketplace seller shipping from Japan with delivery quoted at two to four weeks and one unit listed, and there is no condition statement, no service history and nothing about box or papers. Ask all three before buying, and use the 30-day return window to have the watch checked when it arrives. Every figure here comes from the listing and from Blancpain’s published description, not from handling the watch.

Buying it on Amazon

This is a regular Amazon listing from a marketplace seller with Amazon’s 30-day return window; it is not a Luxury Stores unit and the seller has not published a condition. The second button opens the live search for blue Fifty Fathoms in case this one has sold.

Fifty Fathoms have resold for under new and close to what pre-owned buyers paid, sometimes more, sometimes less; that is a pattern, not a promise, and nothing here is investment advice.

Verdict

A steel Fifty Fathoms with the blue dial and sapphire bezel, on Amazon from a Japanese seller: the sea-coloured version of the original dive watch, with a strap question and three others to ask first.

Strengths

  • The 1953 layout every dive watch copied, in blue
  • Sapphire bezel, calibre 1315 with five days of reserve, 300 metres
  • Steel; lighter on the price than the gold and titanium versions
  • Amazon’s 30-day return window to have it checked

Trade-offs

  • Ships from Japan, two to four weeks; one unit listed
  • Title and model row disagree on the strap; ask
  • No condition, service or papers statement; ask
  • 45mm; a large watch
