The 45mm Fifty Fathoms Automatique is the descendant of Blancpain’s 1953 dive watch, and in steel or gold it is a heavy thing. In titanium, on the titanium bracelet, it is the version you forget is on. Same domed black sapphire bezel, same black dial with the oversized luminous 12, 6 and 9, same date at half past four, same calibre 1315 with five days of reserve and a silicon balance spring, rated to 300 metres. Why titanium on this watch
The Fifty Fathoms Automatique is 45mm across and over 15mm tall, and with a steel bracelet it is one of the heavier watches on this page. Blancpain’s titanium version keeps every dimension and drops the weight by a large fraction, which turns it from a watch you notice all day into one you do not. Titanium also shrugs off salt, and the brushed finish hides the small scratches the metal picks up more readily than steel.
Everything else is the Fifty Fathoms formula: the domed sapphire bezel with the scale under the crystal so it cannot scratch, the black dial with the big luminous numerals from the 1953 original, the red-tipped seconds, and the 1315 with three barrels for five days of running time and a silicon spring that ignores magnets.
