A complete calendar is only useful if it is running. Take an ordinary automatic off for a long weekend and it stops, and when you pick it up the day, date, month and moon all need resetting by hand. Blancpain’s 66R9 has an eight-day reserve, so the watch keeps its calendar through a week in the drawer, and the arc at twelve tells you how much is left before that becomes a problem.

The rest of the dial is the Villeret complete calendar translated into the L-Evolution language: the day and month in windows under twelve, a pointer date on the outer track with a red tip, the moon at six with a face, and numerals big enough to read across a room, all filled with luminous paint.

The dealer’s description is complete: 8866-3630-53B, 18k red gold, 43.5mm by 15.55mm, display back, the 66R9 with its 192 hours, sapphire, 100 metres. One Amazon row says chronograph; the watch has no chronograph, and the photograph shows a calendar dial with no pushers, so ignore that row. L-Evolution was discontinued, so this is likely older stock or a serviced piece; whether it is new with Blancpain’s warranty is not stated in the rows we read. Ask, and ask for the box and papers.
