The Breguet that looks exactly like a Breguet.

Breguet the man, working in Paris from 1775, gave watchmaking the self-winding watch, the tourbillon, the shock absorber and the gong spring, and he also gave it a look: dials turned on a rose engine so the silver catches light in a grid, hands of blued steel ending in an open circle with a point, the moon tip, and a case with a finely fluted band and lugs welded on rather than cast. The Classique line is the modern company keeping that look, and the 5197 is the plainest way to have it.

The dial is still cut on hand-operated rose engines at Breguet’s workshop; no two are identical. The secret signature, a tiny engraved Breguet on the dial, is there against the light as it was in 1795 to defeat forgers.

The dealer’s description is complete and correct: 5197BA, 18k yellow gold, 35.5mm by 7.35mm, display back, the calibre 591A with 38 hours of reserve, brown crocodile strap, 30 metres. One Amazon row says chronograph; the watch has no chronograph and the photograph shows a plain three-hand dial with a date, so ignore that row.

At 35.5mm this is a small watch by current habits, which is the point: it is sized like a dress watch was when the style was invented. Whether it is new with Breguet’s warranty is not stated in the rows we read; ask, and ask for the box and papers. Every figure here comes from the listing and from Breguet’s published description of the 5197, not from handling the watch.
