Breguet’s Marine line takes its name from the 1815 appointment of Abraham-Louis Breguet as chronometer maker to the French navy, and for most of its life it was a heavy watch with a fluted case and wave lugs. The 5517 generation slimmed it: 40mm, a thinner bezel, lugs that flow into the bracelet, and a dial that swaps the old hand-guilloché for a sunburst or a wave engraving with luminous numerals you can read at night. It is the Marine that reads as a sport watch rather than a dress watch with a crown guard.

The 777A inside is Breguet’s modern automatic with a silicon escapement and balance spring, so magnets are not a concern, and the titanium case and bracelet make it the lightest Breguet at this size. The slate dial is the quiet colour; the numerals and hands are filled with luminous paint and the seconds hand runs from the centre.
