Breguet · Type XXI · 3810BR · rose gold · on Amazon

The French air force chronograph, in rose gold.

In 1954 the French Ministry of Defence ordered a flyback chronograph for its pilots and Breguet built the Type 20; the civilian Type XX followed, and the Type XXI of 2004 is the larger modern version with a 24-hour day-night indicator at three and the date tucked into the 12-hour counter at six. This is the 3810BR: 42mm of 18k rose gold, a rotating bezel, a black engine-turned dial with big white Arabic numerals and the flyback function that resets and restarts the chronograph with one push. Sold on Amazon by an independent dealer.

What a flyback is, and why pilots wanted it

On an ordinary chronograph you stop, reset and restart with three pushes. A flyback does all three with one: press the lower pusher while the chronograph is running and the seconds hand snaps back to zero and starts again. Navigators timing legs of a course wanted exactly that, and the French air force specification of 1954 required it. Breguet, Dodane, Auricoste and Vixa built Type 20s to that specification; Breguet’s is the one that survived as a civilian line.

The Type XXI kept the flyback and the rotating bezel and added a 24-hour hand in the subdial at three, so the small dial reads day or night at a glance, and moved the date into the 12-hour counter at six. The dial is engine-turned under the black, which is Breguet’s habit even on its tool watches.

Reading the listing

The dealer’s description is specific: 3810BR, 42mm by 15.2mm in 18k rose gold, black crocodile strap, the calibre 584Q, and the layout of the dial. The Amazon rows add 100 metres and a deployment clasp. What the rows we read do not say is whether the watch is new with Breguet’s warranty or a dealer-serviced piece, so ask before buying, and ask for the box and papers a Breguet should have.

Every figure here comes from the listing and from Breguet’s published description of the Type XXI 3810, not from handling the watch.

Buying it on Amazon

This is a regular Amazon listing from an independent dealer, Luxor Watches on the day we read it, with Amazon’s 30-day return window; it is not a Luxury Stores pre-owned unit. The second button opens the live search for Type XXIs in case this one has sold.

Gold Breguet chronographs have resold for less than new but close to what pre-owned buyers paid, sometimes more, sometimes less; that is a pattern, not a promise, and nothing here is investment advice.

Verdict

A rose gold Breguet Type XXI with a true flyback, on Amazon from a dealer: the pilot chronograph with the longest pedigree on this page, in the metal that makes it a dress watch.

Strengths

  • Flyback chronograph, the function the 1954 air force order required
  • 18k rose gold case and bezel, engine-turned black dial
  • 24-hour day-night indicator and 100m rating
  • Amazon’s return window on a dealer listing

Trade-offs

  • 15.2mm thick; it sits tall under a cuff
  • Condition and warranty not stated in the rows read; ask
  • Gold pilot watch is a niche taste
  • Breguet service is factory-only and slow
