The 1959 Navitimer, remade in gold, 159 times.

Why 1959

The Navitimer of 1959, reference 806, is the one with the beaded bezel, the all-black dial and the winged logo of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, because AOPA members were who Breitling built it for. The slide rule on the bezel does fuel burn, airspeed conversions and rate of climb by turning the ring; pilots used it before cockpits had calculators.

The 2019 re-edition keeps the proportions at 41mm and puts a modern movement behind the vintage face: Breitling’s Manufacture Caliber B09, a hand-wound version of the B01 column-wheel chronograph, COSC-certified, with about 70 hours of reserve.

Gold, and only 159

Breitling made the 1959 Edition in steel in a larger run and in 18k red gold in 159 pieces. The gold one is the collector version: same dial, same movement, a heavier case that warms the black dial. Every figure here comes from the Amazon spec table and Breitling’s published specification for the reference, not from handling the watch.

Thirty metres of water resistance is the honest number for a domed-crystal vintage re-edition. It handles rain. It does not go swimming.

Buying it new on Amazon

This unit is listed new by an independent dealer through Amazon, with Amazon’s 30-day return window on top of the dealer’s warranty; read the warranty line on the listing, because Breitling’s own warranty runs from an authorised sale.

Closed limited editions of well-known references have generally held their value better than the standard models, and the 1959 Edition is a well-known reference. That is a pattern, not a promise, and nothing here is investment advice.

Verdict

A closed 159-piece gold re-edition of the 1959 Navitimer with a hand-wound in-house chronograph, new from a dealer.

Strengths

  • The 806 face: beaded bezel, black dial, winged AOPA logo
  • Hand-wound B09 column-wheel chronograph, COSC, about 70 hours
  • 41mm, the vintage size, in 18k red gold
  • Closed edition of 159; new, with Amazon’s return window

Trade-offs

  • 30m water resistance; keep it dry
  • Hand-wound: wind it every couple of days
  • Dealer warranty, not Breitling’s from purchase
  • A gold Navitimer is a lot of watch for a nubuck strap

FAQ

159 pieces in 18k red gold, per the Amazon spec table and Breitling. The steel version was a larger run.
