The movement, shown from both sides.
A 45mm case in black ion-plated steel with a window cut into the dial for the balance wheel and an exhibition caseback behind it. Bulova built this one so the 21-jewel automatic is the thing you look at.

The open heart
Most automatics hide the movement under a solid dial and let you glimpse the rotor through the back, if at all. The 98A139 cuts an aperture into the dial itself, just above centre, so the balance wheel oscillates in plain sight while you read the time.
Bulova calls it an open heartbeat. Turn the watch over and the exhibition caseback shows the rest of the 21-jewel self-winding movement. Nothing else on the dial competes: baton markers, baton hands with luminous fill, no date.

Black on black
The case, bezel and crown are all stainless steel under a black ion-plated finish, and the strap is black leather. The only bright elements are the hands, the markers and the moving parts inside the aperture, which is exactly the hierarchy the design wants.
Ion plating is a hard surface coating rather than paint. It resists everyday scuffs well, but a deep scratch on a black-plated case shows steel underneath and cannot be polished away the way a bare steel case can.

Living with 45mm
Forty-five millimetres is large for a dress watch and large full stop. Bulova files this under Classic, but the proportions are closer to a sport watch wearing evening clothes. On a small wrist the lugs will overhang.
Water resistance is 30m, which Bulova rates for splashes and rain rather than swimming. That fits the leather strap and the dial aperture. This is a watch for desks, dinners and the lounge, and it makes no other claim.

Verdict
An all-black 45mm automatic that puts its 21-jewel movement on display through the dial and the caseback, for buyers who want mechanical theatre over restraint.
Strengths
- Balance wheel visible through the dial, full movement through the caseback
- Self-winding 21-jewel automatic, no battery
- Black ion-plated steel and black leather make a coherent stealth look
- Domed crystal adds depth to a very flat, dark dial
Trade-offs
- 45mm is a lot of case, particularly in a dress category
- 30m water resistance rules out swimming
- Black plating cannot be polished if it is scratched through
- Bulova does not publish the calibre name or power reserve
Buy it if
Someone who wants a large, dark, mechanical watch with something to look at, on a leather strap, for evenings and office days.
Skip it if
You want a case under 40mm, a bracelet, or water resistance you can swim in. Bulova’s Surveyor is the smaller, brighter sibling.
FAQ
No. It runs on a self-winding 21-jewel automatic movement that is wound by the motion of the wrist, visible through both the dial aperture and the exhibition caseback.
