Cartier is the house that made the wristwatch a shape rather than a circle: the Tank of 1917, the Tortue of 1912, the Tonneau of 1906, each a case with Roman numerals, blued sword hands and a cabochon in the crown. Allongee is French for elongated: the Tank Allongee stretches the 1917 rectangle into a narrow vertical bar, and Laniere is the integrated bracelet of small rectangular gold links that Cartier made for its smallest women’s watches in the 1990s and 2000s. In white gold the whole watch reads as one piece of silver-coloured jewellery until you notice the dial. It is quartz, which is what Cartier put in watches this small; the price is the gold.
