Cartier · Tank Francaise · small · steel · pre-owned on Amazon

The small Tank Francaise, the Cartier women search for.

Cartier drew the Tank in 1917 and redrew it in 1996 as the Tank Francaise: the same rectangle, now curved to the wrist, with vertical brancard sides and a bracelet that grows out of the case in brushed steel links. This is the small model in steel, with a silver dial, black Roman numerals, a railway minute track, blued steel hands and the blue cabochon on the crown, on quartz. Rebag lists it as Very Good with light scratches on the crystal and wear on the case and bracelet, sized to about a six inch wrist, with a dated warranty card. Pre-owned through a Luxury Stores reseller.

Why the Francaise

The original Tank is flat and sits on a strap. The Tank Francaise, from 1996, is the Tank rebuilt as a bracelet watch: the case curves, the sides are thick brushed brancards, and the links continue the case in the same brushed steel so watch and bracelet read as one piece. It became the Cartier women bought most through the 2000s, and it is the one that comes up when Amazon shoppers type Cartier Tank. Cartier redesigned it again in 2023 with a slimmer case; this is the earlier, chunkier version.

The dial is the Cartier formula: silver, Roman numerals, a railway track, blued sword hands, and the sapphire-style blue cabochon set into the crown. The small model is quartz, which is what Cartier fitted to it; the automatic was reserved for the larger sizes.

Reading the listing

Rebag gives the case at 20mm wide and 6mm thick, the band at 15mm, a wrist size of about six inches, steel case and bracelet, a silver dial, a quartz movement, the condition as Very Good with light scratches on the crystal and wear and scratches on the case and band, and a dated warranty card. It does not give the reference. In Cartier’s catalogues the small steel quartz Tank Francaise on a bracelet is W51008Q3, and the photograph matches it; ask Rebag to confirm from the caseback.

Water resistance here is Cartier’s published figure for the Tank Francaise, not measured on this unit. Quartz watches need a battery every few years; ask when it was last changed.

Buying it pre-owned on Amazon

This unit is sold by Rebag through Amazon Luxury Stores, authenticated by the seller with Amazon’s 30-day return window on top; it is one piece, and when it sells the listing goes away, so the second button opens the live search for women’s Tank Francaises.

Steel Tank Francaises have resold for under new and close to what pre-owned buyers paid, sometimes more, sometimes less; that is a pattern, not a promise, and nothing here is investment advice.
