A field watch is a legibility exercise: Arabic numerals at every hour, luminous hands, a plain bezel, a case that survives being knocked. The Avion Field follows that brief and then coats everything, case and bracelet included, in black ion plating.

Ion plating is a hard surface finish rather than paint. It stands up to daily wear well, but a deep gouge will show bare steel and cannot be polished out the way a bare steel case can. That is the trade for the look.

Citizen calls the crystal spherical: a domed mineral glass that curves up from the bezel and gives the dial the depth flat crystals lack. Mineral scratches more readily than sapphire and costs far less to replace, which suits a watch meant to be worn without care.

At 43mm across and 11mm thick, the Avion is larger than the 37mm Garrison that anchors Citizen’s Weekender family, and slimmer than the number suggests, because a solar quartz movement is a thin thing.

Light reaching the dial charges a rechargeable cell that runs the quartz movement. In normal wear that means no battery change, ever, and no caseback opened for one. On a watch with a 100m rating, keeping the seals untouched is a real advantage.

The bracelet is black ion-plated steel with a 22mm lug width, so swapping to a strap is a standard job. A fold-over clasp keeps it on. Retailer listings describe a three-hand layout with a date.
