Six transmitters, and a watch that knows to listen at night.

Radio-controlled timekeeping is an old idea executed quietly. Ground stations in the United States, Europe, Japan and China broadcast a low-frequency signal carrying the time from an atomic reference. The Skyhawk wakes in the small hours, when the airwaves are cleanest, listens for whichever transmitter it can hear, and corrects itself.

What that buys you is not a specification you check. It is the absence of a habit. You never set this watch. It arrives at the right time and stays there, through daylight saving, through a flat spell in a drawer, through a flight across eight time zones.

When it cannot hear a transmitter — and inside a steel building it often cannot — it simply keeps quartz time until the next night it can.

Calibre U680 runs on light.

Eco-Drive is Citizen’s solar movement, and the important part is what it removes. There is no battery hatch, no service interval measured in years, no morning where the watch has quietly stopped. Daylight through a window is enough.

Pair that with the radio sync and the watch becomes genuinely maintenance free: it powers itself and it corrects itself. For something with a chronograph, alarms, a perpetual calendar and world time packed into it, that is a rare kind of quiet.

The bezel is a calculator, and you will probably never use it.

That ring of tiny numerals is a circular slide rule, the same instrument pilots used for fuel burn, ground speed and unit conversion before anything on the panel was electronic. Line up two scales and read the answer off the third.

Nobody navigates with it now. It stays because it is the reason a pilot’s watch looks like a pilot’s watch — density, purpose, a dial that rewards a second look. Buy it for that, not for the arithmetic.

What you are taking on.

  • It is 45mm, and it wears it. This is a large, busy watch with a thick bezel. If your other watch is 38mm, this will feel like a different category of object.
  • The dial is not for skim-reading. Two LCD windows, several subdials and a slide rule mean the time is in there somewhere. That density is the appeal and the cost.
  • Radio sync is not magic. Indoors, inside steel, or far from a transmitter, it will not catch a signal, and you are back to ordinary quartz accuracy until it does.
  • The manual is not optional. Setting an alarm or a second time zone on a multi-function Citizen is genuinely non-obvious the first time.

A watch you set once, by not setting it.

The Skyhawk is for people who like instruments and dislike upkeep. It is powered by light, corrected by radio, sealed to 200 metres and covered in sapphire. Then it gets out of the way.
