Franck Muller · Vanguard · Grande Date · skeleton chronograph · steel · on Amazon

The Vanguard with its dial cut away.

Franck Muller’s Vanguard is the curved tonneau with a flat bezel and luminous numerals. The Grande Date chronograph removes most of the dial, so what you see under the curved crystal is the chronograph itself: the two counters skeletonised down to their rings, the levers and wheels between them, a large date in two windows at lower left and a numbered disc at six, with a tachymeter on the black chapter ring. This one is in steel, about 44 by 54mm, on a black alligator strap. Sold on Amazon by an independent dealer.

What an open chronograph shows

A chronograph is the most mechanical thing most people will ever wear: a second gear train that starts, stops and returns to zero on command, run by a column wheel or a cam and a set of levers. On a normal dial you see none of it. Franck Muller’s Grande Date chronograph cuts the dial back to a chapter ring and two counter rings, so the levers, the hammers and the coupling sit in the open under the crystal and move when you press the pushers.

The large date is the other thing on the dial: two discs showing the day in two windows at lower left, big enough to read without glasses, which is the point of a grande date. The counters are skeletonised too, and the luminous hands are the only solid white on the watch. In steel with a black strap it is the plainest metal Franck Muller offers around the most complicated dial.

Reading the listing

The title carries the specification: Vanguard Grande Date, automatic chronograph, tonneau, stainless steel, skeleton face, luminous hands, sapphire crystal, black band, Swiss made. The Amazon rows carry a box dimension and a dealer model code and nothing else; the description is a paragraph of brand history. The photograph matches the title. The dimensions, calibre family and reserve here are Franck Muller’s published figures, not the dealer’s.

Whether the watch is new with Franck Muller’s warranty is not stated in the rows we read; ask, and ask for the box and papers. Every figure here comes from the listing and from Franck Muller’s published description, not from handling the watch.

Buying it on Amazon

This is a regular Amazon listing from an independent dealer, Luxor Watches on the day we read it, with Amazon’s 30-day return window; it is not a Luxury Stores pre-owned unit. The second button opens the live search for Vanguard Grande Dates in case this one has sold.

Franck Muller Vanguards have resold for well under new and close to what pre-owned buyers paid, sometimes more, sometimes less; that is a pattern, not a promise, and nothing here is investment advice.

Verdict

A steel Vanguard Grande Date skeleton chronograph on Amazon from a dealer: the most mechanical dial in the Vanguard line, in the plainest metal, for someone who wants to watch the chronograph work.

Strengths

  • Openworked chronograph: the levers and wheels move in view
  • Large date in two windows, readable at arm’s length
  • Steel keeps the price and the weight below the gold Vanguards
  • Amazon’s return window on a dealer listing

Trade-offs

  • About 44 by 54mm; a very large watch
  • Hard to read the time at a glance on an open dial
  • Condition and warranty not stated; ask
  • 30 metres; keep it dry

Buy it if

Someone who buys a chronograph for the mechanism and wants to see it, in a case shape nobody else makes.

Skip it if

You want legibility, a smaller case, or a watch that does not start a conversation.

FAQ

The Vanguard tonneau chronograph with the dial opened up to show the chronograph mechanism and a large date in two windows. This one is the steel version on a black alligator strap.
