Franck Muller · Vanguard · V 45 · chronograph · black titanium · on Amazon

The Vanguard chronograph, blacked out and lightened.

The V 45 chronograph is Franck Muller’s big tonneau with two counters, a date at six and a tachymeter on the curve. In gold it is heavy; in titanium with a black coating it is the lightest version the company makes, and the darkest: a matte black case, a charcoal dial with the numerals outlined in black rather than gold, black counters and a black alligator strap. Inside is the same FM 7000, a decorated Valjoux 7750 automatic. Sold on Amazon by an independent dealer, and the least expensive Vanguard chronograph on this page.

Titanium under the black

Franck Muller’s Vanguard chronographs come in gold, steel and titanium, and the titanium ones are the wearable ones: a case this size in gold sits heavy, in steel it is fine, in titanium it disappears. The black coating turns the whole watch into one tone, so the shape of the barrel and the outline of the numerals do the work instead of the metal, and the tachymeter scale in white is the brightest thing on it.

The dial keeps the Vanguard formula: applied numerals stretched along the curve, two counters at three and nine, a date at six. The movement is the FM 7000, Franck Muller’s decorated Valjoux 7750, the same automatic chronograph as the gold and steel Vanguards, with about 42 hours of reserve.

Reading the listing

The title carries the specification: Vanguard, titanium, Swiss automatic chronograph, tonneau, black face, luminous hands, tachymeter, date, sapphire crystal, black leather and rubber strap, V 45 CC DT AC BR NR. The Amazon rows carry weight and a dealer model code and nothing else; the description is a paragraph of brand history. The photograph matches the title. The dimensions, calibre and reserve here are Franck Muller’s published figures for the V 45 chronograph, not the dealer’s.

Whether the watch is new with Franck Muller’s warranty is not stated in the rows we read; ask, and ask for the box and papers. Every figure here comes from the listing and from Franck Muller’s published description, not from handling the watch.

Buying it on Amazon

This is a regular Amazon listing from an independent dealer, Luxor Watches on the day we read it, with Amazon’s 30-day return window; it is not a Luxury Stores pre-owned unit. The second button opens the live search for titanium Vanguard chronographs in case this one has sold.

Franck Muller Vanguards have resold for well under new and close to what pre-owned buyers paid, sometimes more, sometimes less; that is a pattern, not a promise, and nothing here is investment advice.

Verdict

A black titanium Vanguard V 45 chronograph on Amazon from a dealer: the Franck Muller barrel at its lightest and darkest, and the cheapest Vanguard chronograph on this page.

Strengths

  • Titanium makes a 44 by 54mm chronograph wearable
  • All black; the shape and the numerals carry the design
  • Same FM 7000 chronograph as the gold Vanguards
  • Amazon’s return window on a dealer listing

Trade-offs

  • Black coating shows bare titanium if it chips
  • Condition and warranty not stated; ask
  • 30 metres; keep it dry
  • Grey on black is the least legible Vanguard dial

Buy it if

Someone who wants the Franck Muller shape without the weight or the gold, in a colour that does not shout.

Skip it if

You want a watch under 42mm, or a dial you can read in the dark at a glance.

FAQ

AC is Franck Muller’s code for titanium and NR for the black coating; BR is the black dial. So V 45 CC DT AC BR NR is the V 45 chronograph with date in black-coated titanium with a black dial.
