The 1970s produced three integrated steel sports watches with a designer’s name attached: the Royal Oak, the Nautilus and the Ingenieur, all by Gérald Genta. The Laureato was the fourth, in 1975, designed in-house at Girard-Perregaux by a Milanese architect whose name the company never released, and it started life as a quartz watch, which is why it is the one collectors forget. The octagon sits inside a round bezel rather than being the bezel, which is the tell.

The 2017 relaunch put GP’s own automatic inside and offered the 42 in steel, titanium, gold and this titanium-and-pink-gold mix. The hobnail dial is the original 1975 pattern, and the grey one is the quietest of the set.

The dealer’s description is short but right: brushed titanium case with polished bevels, octagonal brushed and polished pink gold bezel. The Amazon rows add Swiss automatic, 100 metres, a grey guilloche dial and a pink gold bezel, and then say bracelet, which the photograph contradicts: the watch is on a black alligator strap with pink gold end links. Read the photograph; the strap version is the reference we match it to.

The rows we read do not say whether the watch is new with GP’s warranty or a dealer-serviced piece; ask, and ask for the box and papers. Every figure here comes from the listing and from Girard-Perregaux’s published description, not from handling the watch.
