Rectangular watches were the 1930s and 1940s; round ones took over after the war. Girard-Perregaux’s 1945 design is one of the few from that period still in production, and it survives because of the curve: the case, the crystal and the movement plate all bend to follow the wrist, so a watch that is 36mm wide sits like a smaller one. The stepped corners are the tell from across a room.

The dial on this version is a sheet of sapphire tinted blue, so the bridges, wheels and the large-date discs are visible under a blue wash rather than through an opening. The moon phase at six is a blue disc with a gold moon and stars, and the numerals and hands are rose gold to match the case.

The Amazon rows are unusually specific for a dealer listing: the calibre GP03300, its frequency of 28,800 vibrations an hour, 32 jewels and about 46 hours of reserve, and 30 metres of water resistance, which is the figure for a dress watch you keep away from water. The dealer’s own description is three words, 18k rose gold case, and the title gives the rest: XXL, blue tinted, moon phase.

The full reference is not stated, and neither is whether the watch is new with GP’s warranty or a dealer-serviced piece. At this price, ask both questions and ask for the box and papers before you buy.
