Girard-Perregaux · Vintage 1945 XXL · skeleton · moon phase · black DLC · on Amazon

The art-deco rectangle, blacked out.

Girard-Perregaux’s Vintage 1945 is a curved rectangle revived from a 1945 design, bowed along the wrist and across it. This XXL version coats the steel case in black DLC and replaces the dial with a smoked sapphire plate over an openworked calibre GP03300, so the movement shows through in shadow under applied numerals, with a large date in red under twelve, red minute markers, and a moon phase inside the small seconds at six. On a black alligator strap with red stitching. Sold on Amazon by an independent dealer.

DLC, and what it does to the watch

DLC is diamond-like carbon, a hard black coating bonded to the steel. It does not change the shape of the Vintage 1945, the double curve of the case and the crystal, or the hand-bent dauphine hands; it changes the colour to a flat black that swallows light, so the polished numerals and hands and the red date are the only bright things on the wrist. It also resists scratches better than bare steel, though a deep knock will show the metal underneath.

The dial is the same construction as the steel skeleton version on this page: a tinted sapphire plate over the openworked GP03300, with the large date in two windows, the railway track and the moon phase applied on top. Here the tint is smoked grey rather than blue, the date discs are red, and the effect is closer to a night sky than a blueprint.

Reading the listing

The title names the watch, Black DLC Vintage 1945 XXL Moonphase 25882-21-223-BF6A, and the photograph shows it: matte black case, smoked see-through dial, red large date, moon phase, black strap with red stitching. The Amazon rows carry no specs, and the description is Girard-Perregaux’s own paragraph about the curved case, so there is nothing to contradict; the dimensions, calibre and reserve here are GP’s published figures for the reference.

Whether the watch is new with GP’s warranty is not stated in the rows we read; ask, and ask for the box and papers. Every figure here comes from the listing and from Girard-Perregaux’s published description, not from handling the watch.

Buying it on Amazon

This is a regular Amazon listing from an independent dealer, Luxor Watches on the day we read it, with Amazon’s 30-day return window; it is not a Luxury Stores pre-owned unit. The second button opens the live search for DLC Vintage 1945s in case this one has sold.

Girard-Perregaux Vintage 1945 models have resold for well under new and close to what pre-owned buyers paid, sometimes more, sometimes less; that is a pattern, not a promise, and nothing here is investment advice.

Verdict

A black DLC Vintage 1945 XXL with a smoked see-through dial and a red big date, on Amazon from a dealer: the same curved rectangle as the steel skeleton, for someone who wants it in the dark.

Strengths

  • Double-curved rectangular case in scratch-resistant black DLC
  • Openworked in-house GP03300 under a smoked sapphire dial
  • Red large date and moon phase, the only colour on a black watch
  • Amazon’s return window on a dealer listing

Trade-offs

  • DLC shows bare steel if it chips; not refinishable like plain steel
  • Condition and warranty not stated; ask
  • 30 metres; a dress watch
  • Smoked dial over an open movement is the least legible version

Buy it if

Someone who wants the Vintage 1945 shape with a visible movement and would rather it disappear on the wrist than shine.

Skip it if

You want a round watch, a solid dial, or a coating you can polish out.

FAQ

Diamond-like carbon, a hard black coating bonded to the steel. It resists scratches better than bare steel and gives the matte black finish, but a deep knock exposes the metal underneath and it cannot be polished out.
