Master Chronometer
Since 2015 Omega has sent its movements to METAS, the Swiss federal metrology institute, for a second certification on top of COSC: the finished watch is tested for accuracy in six positions, for water resistance, and for keeping time after exposure to a 15,000-gauss magnet. Calibre 8901 is the gold-rotor version of that movement, and the Planet Ocean was the first line to carry it.
The helium escape valve at ten is for saturation divers who live in pressurised habitats; on a gold watch it is heritage rather than need, but the 600-metre rating is real, and the ceramic dial and bezel will not fade.
Sedna gold
Sedna is Omega’s 18k red gold alloy with palladium added so the colour holds; the same alloy appears on the bezel numerals through Liquidmetal, an amorphous alloy poured into the ceramic so the scale sits flush. Blue ceramic and red gold is the combination Omega chose for the halo version of the 2016 Planet Ocean, and it has not changed since.
