The 1861 Moonwatch on its bracelet. The last of the old ones.

The Moonwatch is the Speedmaster Professional, the hand-wound chronograph NASA qualified for spaceflight in 1965 and Buzz Aldrin wore on the Moon in 1969. Its shape has not changed: a 42mm asymmetric steel case with twisted lyre lugs, a black tachymeter bezel, a black dial with three sub-dials, and a crown between two pushers. What Omega changes, every couple of decades, is what is inside and what is on top. Reference 311.30.42.30.01.005 is the Moonwatch of the last years before the 3861: calibre 1861, hesalite crystal, and the flat-link bracelet with the clasp of that generation. It is the watch most people who bought a Speedmaster in the 2010s own.

Against the current watch it gives up the Co-Axial escapement, the silicon balance spring, hacking seconds and the METAS certificate, and gains nothing except the argument that it is the movement lineage of the Moon landings, which is a real argument to a lot of Speedmaster people. Omega no longer lists it; this is a dealer’s stock.
