The Moonwatch. Hesalite, bracelet, calibre 3861.

The Moonwatch is the Speedmaster Professional, the hand-wound chronograph NASA qualified for spaceflight in 1965 and Buzz Aldrin wore on the Moon in 1969. Its shape has not changed: a 42mm asymmetric steel case with twisted lyre lugs, a black tachymeter bezel, a black dial with three sub-dials, and a crown between two pushers. What Omega changes, every couple of decades, is what is inside and what is on top. In 2021 the inside became the 3861: still hand-wound, still a column-wheel chronograph, but with Omega’s Co-Axial escapement, a silicon balance spring, a hacking seconds hand and a METAS Master Chronometer certificate, which means the finished watch passed tests for accuracy and 15,000 gauss of magnetism.

On top, this reference keeps hesalite, the domed acrylic crystal of the original. It scratches, and it polishes out with toothpaste; it does not shatter, which is why NASA wanted it. The bracelet is the 2021 five-arch-link design with a clasp that adjusts by a few millimetres without tools.
