Omega · Speedmaster Moonwatch · 3861 · hesalite · nylon strap · on Amazon

The Moonwatch on the strap. 91 grams and the lowest 3861 price here.

This is the Speedmaster Professional the way the astronauts actually wore it, on a strap rather than the bracelet: the same 42mm asymmetric steel case, black step dial, black tachymeter bezel and hesalite crystal, with the hand-wound calibre 3861 Master Chronometer inside, on Omega’s black coated nylon strap with a foldover clasp. It weighs 91 grams against 134 on the bracelet, it costs less than the bracelet version, and the 20mm lugs take any strap you like later. Sold on Amazon by a marketplace dealer, with 7 ratings when we read it.

Why the strap

The Moonwatch is the Speedmaster Professional, the hand-wound chronograph NASA qualified for spaceflight in 1965 and Buzz Aldrin wore on the Moon in 1969. Its shape has not changed: a 42mm asymmetric steel case with twisted lyre lugs, a black tachymeter bezel, a black dial with three sub-dials, and a crown between two pushers. What Omega changes, every couple of decades, is what is inside and what is on top. The bracelet was never the point: NASA issued the watch on a long Velcro strap over the spacesuit, and most of the famous photographs show it on a strap. This reference is the 2021 3861 watch on Omega’s coated nylon strap, which is the closest thing in the current catalogue.

It is also the cheapest way to the current movement. The head is identical to the bracelet watches, hesalite crystal and all, so the difference is the band and the weight: 91 grams, which on a hand-wound watch you handle twice a day is not nothing. Omega’s bracelet fits the 20mm lugs if you change your mind.

Reading the listing

The listing carries the full reference, 310.32.42.50.01.001, in the title and the model row, and the dealer’s description lists the black dial, steel case, black nylon fabric band, hand-wound movement, 50 metres, fixed bezel and a deployant clasp with push-button release. The dealer’s 13.58mm thickness disagrees with Omega’s 13.18mm, and the copy uses Omega’s. The hesalite crystal, calibre 3861, its METAS certification and reserve are Omega’s published figures for the reference.

The dealer is World Of Watches, a marketplace dealer, and the rows we read do not state whether the watch is new with Omega’s five-year warranty; ask, and ask for the box and card. Nothing here was measured on the watch.

Buying it on Amazon

This is a regular Amazon listing from a marketplace seller with Amazon’s 30-day return window; it is not a Luxury Stores pre-owned unit and the seller has not published a condition. The second button opens the live search for Moonwatches on the nylon strap in case this one has sold.

Speedmasters have resold for under new and close to what pre-owned buyers paid, sometimes more, sometimes less; that is a pattern, not a promise, and nothing here is investment advice.

Verdict

The current Moonwatch with hesalite on Omega’s nylon strap and the 3861 Master Chronometer, on Amazon from a marketplace dealer: the lightest and least expensive way to the current Speedmaster Professional, with the reference on the listing.

Strengths

  • Calibre 3861 Master Chronometer, hand-wound, about 50 hours
  • 91 grams on the nylon strap; the lowest 3861 price on this page
  • Hesalite crystal; the 1969 look
  • Full reference on the listing; 7 ratings; Amazon’s return window

Trade-offs

  • Condition and warranty not stated by the dealer; ask
  • Nylon; the bracelet is a separate purchase
  • Hesalite scratches; it polishes out
  • 50 metres; not for swimming

FAQ

Yes. Reference 310.32.42.50.01.001 is the same case, dial, hesalite crystal and calibre 3861 as the bracelet watch; only the strap differs, and the 20mm lugs take the Omega bracelet later.
