Omega · Speedmaster Moonwatch · 3861 · sapphire front and back · bracelet · on Amazon

The Moonwatch with sapphire on both sides.

This is the Speedmaster Professional for people who want to see the movement: the same 42mm asymmetric steel case, black step dial, black tachymeter bezel with the dot over ninety and five-arch-link bracelet as the hesalite watch, but with a domed sapphire crystal in front and a sapphire caseback behind, through which you can watch the calibre 3861 at work. The 3861 is Omega’s hand-wound Co-Axial chronograph, certified as a Master Chronometer by METAS, with about 50 hours of reserve. Sapphire does not scratch, and the caseback version is a millimetre thinner. Sold on Amazon by a marketplace seller shipping from Japan, with two left when we read it.

Sapphire sandwich

The Moonwatch is the Speedmaster Professional, the hand-wound chronograph NASA qualified for spaceflight in 1965 and Buzz Aldrin wore on the Moon in 1969. Its shape has not changed: a 42mm asymmetric steel case with twisted lyre lugs, a black tachymeter bezel, a black dial with three sub-dials, and a crown between two pushers. What Omega changes, every couple of decades, is what is inside and what is on top. This reference is the 2021 watch with the crystal purists argue about swapped for sapphire, front and back. The front is domed to keep the hesalite look; the back is a window onto the 3861, with its rhodium-plated bridges, column wheel and Co-Axial escapement.

Sapphire does not scratch in normal wear and the caseback version is slightly thinner, at 13.18mm against 13.54mm. What you give up is the 1969 look of the acrylic dome and the exact NASA spec, which is why Omega sells both and why the two are on this page side by side.

Reading the listing

The listing’s title is just the brand; the model row and the seller’s description carry the full reference, 310.30.42.50.01.002. The photograph shows the asymmetric case, the black bezel, the step dial and the arched-link bracelet. The case size, thickness, lug figures, sapphire crystal and caseback, calibre 3861, its METAS certification, reserve and 50 metres are Omega’s published figures for the reference.

The seller is MS-TR JAPAN, a marketplace seller shipping from Japan with two left when we read it, and the rows we read do not state whether the watch is new with Omega’s five-year warranty; ask, and ask for the box and card. Nothing here was measured on the watch.

Buying it on Amazon

This is a regular Amazon listing from a marketplace seller with Amazon’s 30-day return window; it is not a Luxury Stores pre-owned unit and the seller has not published a condition. The second button opens the live search for sapphire Moonwatches in case this one has sold.

Speedmasters have resold for under new and close to what pre-owned buyers paid, sometimes more, sometimes less; that is a pattern, not a promise, and nothing here is investment advice.

FAQ

Hesalite is the acrylic crystal of the original, domed, scratchable, polishable and shatterproof. Sapphire does not scratch and this version adds a sapphire caseback. Omega makes both; the movement is the same 3861.
