Illustrative render — hero view of the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date 15238 (18k yellow gold, 34mm, champagne dial)

Rolex · Oyster Perpetual Date · 15238 · pre-owned on Amazon

The solid gold Date, one size under the Datejust.

The Oyster Perpetual Date is the Datejust’s smaller sibling: the same Oyster case, fluted bezel, Cyclops and movement, in a 34mm case instead of 36. The 15238 is the one in solid 18k yellow gold, with a champagne dial, gold batons and the gold Oyster bracelet, running the calibre 3135 that Rolex used in everything from the Submariner to the Datejust for thirty years. Pre-owned through a Luxury Stores reseller, graded Excellent. The listing calls it a Datejust; the dial says Date.

Date versus Datejust

Rolex made two versions of its date watch for decades: the Datejust at 36mm and the Oyster Perpetual Date at 34mm. Same Oyster case construction, same fluted bezel option, same Cyclops, same calibre 3135 from 1988 on; the difference is two millimetres of case and the word on the dial. The Date was quietly dropped in the 2000s, which makes a solid gold one a slightly rarer thing than the equivalent Datejust.

The 15238 is the yellow gold reference with the fluted bezel. On a 6.5 to 7 inch wrist it wears the way a 36 did in the 1980s, which is to say correctly, and on the gold Oyster bracelet it is a lot of gold for a watch that reads as restrained.

Reading the listing

The seller titles the watch as a Datejust 15238, but the 15238 is the Oyster Perpetual Date and the dial in the photograph reads DATE, not DATEJUST; the reference number is the reliable part. The photograph shows the champagne dial, the fluted bezel and the gold Oyster bracelet with its flat brushed centre links. Condition is Excellent with light scratching throughout the hardware, which for a gold bracelet that has been worn is what you should expect.

The serial, box and papers are not stated, so ask. Every figure here comes from the listing and from Rolex’s published description of the 15238, not from handling the watch.

Buying it pre-owned on Amazon

Rolex is pre-owned only on Amazon. This unit is sold by What Goes Around Comes Around through Amazon Luxury Stores, authenticated by the seller with Amazon’s 30-day return window on top; it is one piece, and when it sells the listing goes away, so the second button opens the live search for gold Oyster Perpetual Dates.

Solid gold Rolexes have resold close to what people paid for them for decades, sometimes more, sometimes less, and the gold sets a floor; that is a pattern, not a promise, and nothing here is investment advice.

Verdict

A solid gold 34mm Oyster Perpetual Date on the gold Oyster bracelet, pre-owned on Amazon: the discontinued smaller gold Rolex, for less than a Day-Date.

Strengths

  • Solid 18k gold case and Oyster bracelet
  • Calibre 3135, the most serviceable movement Rolex has made
  • 34mm suits smaller wrists and reads as vintage-correct
  • Amazon’s return window on top of the seller’s authentication

Trade-offs

  • Listing title is wrong (Datejust); it is the Date
  • Serial, box and papers not stated
  • 34mm is small if you are used to modern sizes
  • One unit; when it sells, it is gone

Buy it if

Someone who wants a solid gold Rolex on a gold bracelet at a size that suits a smaller wrist, and does not need the day window of the President.

Skip it if

You want 36mm or larger, or you need the papers in hand before you buy.

FAQ

No. The 15238 is the Oyster Perpetual Date, the 34mm version of the same watch; the dial reads DATE. The listing title says Datejust, which is a naming error.
