Rolex cuts its meteorite dials from the Gibeon meteorite, an iron-nickel mass that fell on Namibia and cooled over millions of years into the crosshatched crystal pattern no forge can reproduce; each slice is different. Where the dial came from
The Gibeon meteorite fell in prehistoric Namibia and was found by the Nama people long before Europeans catalogued it in the 1830s. It is an iron-nickel octahedrite, and when it is sliced and etched with acid the two alloys in it show as interlocking bands, the Widmanstätten pattern, which forms only when the metal cools over millions of years in space. Rolex has used it for dials since the 1990s, on the Day-Date, the Daytona and the Datejust; every dial is a different slice.
On this one the ten hour markers are diamonds in white gold settings pressed into the stone, with the Cyclops over the date at three, and the whole thing sits under a white gold fluted bezel that catches the same cold light the dial does.
Reading the listing
The seller gives the reference, 78274, the mid-size Datejust of the early 2000s: 31mm steel, white gold fluted bezel, calibre 2235 with quickset date. The serial prefix K puts it around 2001. It comes with its branded box and papers, and the wrist range is given as 8 to 10 inches, which is a long bracelet that will need links removed for most people.
One line is wrong: the description says Jubilee bracelet, but the photograph shows a three-link steel Oyster bracelet, and the clasp is stamped 78350, which is the Oyster bracelet reference. Read the photograph. Every other figure here comes from the listing and from Rolex’s published description of the 78274, not from handling the watch.
