The Datejust 36 is the watch Rolex built its reputation on: the first self-winding wristwatch with a date that changed at midnight, launched in 1945, and made ever since in a 36mm Oyster case with a screw-down crown, an automatic chronometer movement, the date under its Cyclops lens at three, a fluted, smooth or engine-turned bezel, and a Jubilee or Oyster bracelet. Because Rolex made it for eight decades in every dial and metal, the pre-owned market is deep and this is where the money goes when people search for a Rolex that is not a Submariner.

The 116231 is the Datejust 36 Rolex made from 2005 to 2018 in steel and its own Everose pink gold, the alloy it casts with a little platinum so the colour holds. Black with Roman numerals is the dial that makes the rose read as a colour rather than a shine, and the Jubilee with the Crownclasp is the bracelet this generation introduced. The calibre 3135 inside is the workhorse Datejust movement with a quickset date. It was replaced in 2018 by the 126231 with the calibre 3235.

WGACA gives the reference as 116231, the size as 36mm, the case as having a fluted bezel and sapphire crystal, the movement as automatic, the dial as black with Roman numerals, the bracelet as a Jubilee with a hidden crown clasp, the box as included, a serial, the wrist as 8 inches and the condition as Excellent with minor scratching. It does not state papers or year. The Everose tone is from the title and the photograph and matches Rolex’s catalogue for the 116231; the calibre, chronometer rating, reserve and 100 metres are Rolex’s published figures.
