Why the 36 with a black dial is the Datejust
The Datejust of 1945 was the first waterproof automatic wristwatch with a date that changed at midnight, and it was 36mm. Rolex has offered 31, 41 and other sizes since, but the 36 is the one the model was designed around and the one that still fits the widest range of wrists. The black dial with luminous batons is the least fussy dial Rolex makes for it: no diamonds, no Roman numerals, nothing to date it.
The 126234 of 2018 is the current version: the same look as the previous 116234, with the calibre 3235 inside, which runs about 70 hours off the wrist instead of 48 and holds Rolex’s tighter Superlative Chronometer tolerance of plus or minus two seconds a day.
