The Datejust 36 is the watch Rolex built its reputation on: the first self-winding wristwatch with a date that changed at midnight, launched in 1945, and made ever since in a 36mm Oyster case with a screw-down crown, an automatic chronometer movement, the date under its Cyclops lens at three, a fluted, smooth or engine-turned bezel, and a Jubilee or Oyster bracelet. Because Rolex made it for eight decades in every dial and metal, the pre-owned market is deep and this is where the money goes when people search for a Rolex that is not a Submariner.

The computer dial is the Jubilee-pattern dial with Arabic numerals instead of batons: ROLEX repeated in tiny type across an ivory face, with 1 to 12 in applied gold numerals, and the name came from the pattern looking like a circuit board. Rolex fitted it to the 16233 in the 1990s, the two-tone Datejust with the yellow gold fluted bezel and the two-tone Jubilee. The seller writes Oyster clasp closure, which reads like an Oyster bracelet; the photograph shows a Jubilee, and the copy goes with the photograph.

WGACA gives the reference as 16233, the case as 36mm with a fluted bezel and sapphire crystal, the movement as automatic, the closure as an Oyster clasp and the condition as Excellent with light scratching and wear throughout. It does not state box, papers or year. The two-tone metal, the computer dial with Arabic numerals and the Jubilee bracelet are from the title and the photograph; the calibre, chronometer rating, quickset date, reserve and 100 metres are Rolex’s published figures for the 16233.
