Since 1945

The Datejust was the first self-winding wristwatch to show the date in a window on the dial, in 1945. Every later date watch is a descendant. The 41mm version in the 126300 family arrived in 2016 and brought the current-generation Caliber 3235 with it.

The shape has not changed much because it has not needed to. A round Oyster case, a screw-down crown and caseback, a Cyclops lens over the date, and a choice of bracelet. That is the whole recipe.

Caliber 3235

Rolex’s 3235 is an in-house automatic with a 70-hour power reserve. Rolex certifies every finished watch to its own Superlative Chronometer standard of -2/+2 seconds per day after casing, which is tighter than the COSC tolerance most Swiss chronometers are tested to.

A long weekend off the wrist does not stop it. Those figures are Rolex’s; no unit has been timed for this page.

Choices within 126300

The 126300 number covers a family. The bezel is smooth or fluted 18k gold, depending on the configuration. The bracelet is a three-link Oyster or a five-link Jubilee, both with the Oysterlock folding safety clasp. Dials run through silver, blue, black, white and others, with stick or Roman markers.

This page does not assume a particular dial. What every configuration shares is the 41mm case, the 3235, the Cyclops, and the Chromalight lume with its blue glow.

What the money buys

Rolex sells through authorized dealers and its own boutiques. It is not on Amazon and this page has no affiliate link. The price band shown is derived from published authorized-dealer retail, and steel Datejusts are typically allocated rather than bought off the shelf.

What that buys is the most recognisable steel dress-sport watch made, a movement with a certified accuracy standard, and a design that the secondary market treats as a reference point too.

Verdict

The reference point for the steel dress-sport category, with a 70-hour in-house movement certified to -2/+2 seconds a day.

Strengths

  • Caliber 3235 with a 70-hour reserve and Superlative Chronometer certification
  • 100m water resistance on a watch that works with a suit
  • Smooth or fluted bezel, Oyster or Jubilee bracelet
  • Long record of strong resale value

Trade-offs

  • Not sold on Amazon; retail availability depends on dealer allocation
  • 41mm is the larger Datejust; the 36mm suits smaller wrists
  • Cyclops lens divides opinion
  • Many configurations, so quoted prices vary by bezel and bracelet
