Why 41, and why the fluted bezel is gold
Rolex made the Datejust at 36mm for seventy years. The Datejust II of 2009 tried 41 with a heavier case and bigger hands and did not last; the Datejust 41 of 2016 kept the larger dial but slimmed the bezel and lugs back to the classic proportions, and it has been the men’s Datejust since. It is 12mm thick and sits flat.
The fluted bezel is always white gold on a steel Rolex, because steel cannot be cut to that pattern and keep the shine. Rolex calls the pairing white Rolesor. From across a table it reads as an all-steel watch; up close the flutes throw light the way a smooth bezel does not.
