Why it is called the President
Rolex launched the Day-Date in 1956 as the first wristwatch to spell the day of the week out in full, and made it only in gold or platinum. The bracelet it came on, the three-link President, gave the watch its nickname after the American presidents who wore it. It has never been offered in steel, which is the whole point: it is the Rolex for the desk, not the deck.
The 18038 is the generation collectors point to as the sweet spot: sapphire crystal and a quickset date from Caliber 3055, but still the compact 36mm case and the older, warmer dial furniture. This unit is a black dial with baton markers, the most understated version there is.
What forty-year-old gold means
Gold is soft. A President bracelet from about 1979 has stretched a little and been polished more than once, and the seller’s grade of light scratching and tarnishing throughout the watch is exactly what to expect. What matters is whether the links are tight and the clasp still hides cleanly, which the return window lets you check.
Rolex rated the case to 100 metres when new, but a vintage Oyster should be pressure-tested before it goes near water. Every figure here is Rolex’s published specification for the reference, not a measurement of the listed unit.

Amazon does not sell new Rolex. Several Day-Dates were listed the day we looked, from this black dial to diamond-set and white gold examples at higher prices.
A gold Day-Date carries its metal value with it, and the reference has historically resold close to what it cost. That is a pattern, not a promise, and nothing here is investment advice.
