Why the Explorer, not the Submariner

The Submariner is the Rolex people picture. The Explorer is the Rolex people keep. It has no rotating bezel to catch a cuff, no date to set, no cyclops to divide opinion, and a 40mm case that sits flatter than any other steel Rolex sports model. The dial is the whole design: black, three baton-and-numeral pairs, a small crown at twelve.

It is also the least expensive way into a current steel Rolex sports watch on the pre-owned market, which is where Amazon sells it. That matters more than it sounds. A watch you can buy and, if it turns out not to be for you, return inside the window, is a very different purchase from a forum deal.

Caliber 3230

Inside is the 3230, Rolex’s time-only automatic with the Chronergy escapement and a Parachrom hairspring, rated by Rolex to -2/+2 seconds a day after casing, which is tighter than the COSC chronometer standard it also passes. The reserve is about 70 hours, so a watch taken off Friday evening is still running Monday morning.

None of this is visible. The caseback is solid, the crown screws down, and the whole thing is built to be forgotten on the wrist for a decade between services. That is the point of an Explorer.
