Sodalite is a deep blue mineral with white veins of calcite running through it, and Rolex sliced it thin for a small number of Datejust dials in the 1990s and 2000s. Under diamonds it reads as a lapis dial that has been through a storm. Sodalite, and the other stone dials
Rolex has put a short list of stones on Datejust dials: lapis lazuli, onyx, mother of pearl, meteorite, and a few rarer ones like sodalite and cacholong. Sodalite is often mistaken for lapis; it is a deeper, slightly greyer blue, with white calcite veins rather than gold pyrite flecks. It is softer than lapis and harder to cut without cracking, which is why Rolex made few of them and why they cost more than the plain blue dial today.
The ten diamond markers are set in white gold surrounds pressed into the stone, with the Cyclops over the date at three. The bezel is white gold fluted, so the whole watch reads in blue, white and steel.
