Illustrative render — hero view of the Rolex Lady-Datejust 26 79174 (steel, white gold fluted bezel, sodalite diamond dial)

Rolex · Lady-Datejust 26 · 79174 · sodalite dial · pre-owned on Amazon

The Lady-Datejust with a blue stone dial.

Sodalite is a deep blue mineral with white veins of calcite running through it, and Rolex sliced it thin for a small number of Datejust dials in the 1990s and 2000s. Under diamonds it reads as a lapis dial that has been through a storm. This one is on the 79174, the Lady-Datejust in steel with an 18k white gold fluted bezel, on the steel Jubilee, with the calibre 2235. Pre-owned through a Luxury Stores reseller, graded Excellent.

Sodalite, and the other stone dials

Rolex has put a short list of stones on Datejust dials: lapis lazuli, onyx, mother of pearl, meteorite, and a few rarer ones like sodalite and cacholong. Sodalite is often mistaken for lapis; it is a deeper, slightly greyer blue, with white calcite veins rather than gold pyrite flecks. It is softer than lapis and harder to cut without cracking, which is why Rolex made few of them and why they cost more than the plain blue dial today.

The ten diamond markers are set in white gold surrounds pressed into the stone, with the Cyclops over the date at three. The bezel is white gold fluted, so the whole watch reads in blue, white and steel.

Reading the listing

The seller gives the reference, 79174, which is the Lady-Datejust of about 1999 to 2010 in steel with a white gold fluted bezel and the calibre 2235 with quickset date. The photograph confirms the bezel, the dial and the steel Jubilee. Condition is Excellent with light scratching to the hardware and light tarnishing and wear to the caseback, which is a worn watch that has not been over-polished.

The serial, box and papers are not stated, and the listing does not say whether the sodalite dial is factory; stone dials were also fitted at service and by dealers, and a factory dial is worth more. Ask. Every figure here comes from the listing and from Rolex’s published description of the 79174, not from handling the watch.

Buying it pre-owned on Amazon

Rolex is pre-owned only on Amazon. This unit is sold by What Goes Around Comes Around through Amazon Luxury Stores, authenticated by the seller with Amazon’s 30-day return window on top; it is one piece, and when it sells the listing goes away, so the second button opens the live search for stone-dial Lady-Datejusts.

Stone-dial Lady-Datejusts have resold close to what people paid for them and often above the plain-dial equivalent, sometimes more, sometimes less; that is a pattern, not a promise, and nothing here is investment advice.

Verdict

A steel Lady-Datejust with a sodalite diamond dial on the Jubilee, pre-owned on Amazon: the ladies’ Rolex in a blue stone instead of another white dial.

Strengths

  • Sodalite stone dial with diamond markers, one of the rarer Rolex stones

  • Calibre 2235 with quickset date
  • Amazon’s return window on top of the seller’s authentication

Trade-offs

  • Serial, box and papers not stated; ask
  • Dial originality not stated; ask
  • 26mm; small by today’s standards
  • One unit; when it sells, it is gone

Buy it if

Someone who wants the steel Lady-Datejust with a dial that is actually rare, in blue, and will ask the two questions before buying.

Skip it if

You want a 28 or 31mm case, papers in hand, or a plain dial for daily wear.

FAQ

A thin slice of sodalite, a deep blue mineral with white calcite veins, set into the dial plate. Rolex made a small number in the 1990s and 2000s; it is often confused with lapis lazuli, which has gold flecks instead of white veins.
