The scientist’s Rolex, and Rolex stopped making it.

Milgauss means a thousand gauss, the magnetic field the original 1956 watch was built to shrug off for the physicists at CERN. A magnetised hairspring makes a mechanical watch run fast; Rolex’s answer was a soft-iron inner case around the movement and, later, a Parachrom hairspring that does not care about magnets in the first place. The 116400 generation has both.

The lightning-bolt seconds hand is the other half of the design, an orange hand shaped like a bolt on an otherwise plain three-hander. It is the only Rolex that has ever looked playful.

Rolex made the modern Milgauss with a clear sapphire (the 116400, black or white dial) and with a green-tinted sapphire (the 116400GV, black dial and later the blue Z-Blue dial). The GV is the one collectors chase. The Amazon listing says only 40mm, black dial and steel, so the photographs are what tell you which one this is: a green edge on the crystal means the GV.

Rolex retired the Milgauss in 2023 with no replacement, which is why prices firmed up the moment it left the catalogue. Every figure here is Rolex’s published specification, not a measurement of the listed unit.

Amazon does not sell new Rolex, and nobody sells a new Milgauss now.
