In 1964 NASA quietly purchased every commercially available chronograph that met its specifications — from Omega, Rolex, Longines, Wittnauer, Hamilton, and others — and put them through what is still the most brutal qualification trial ever administered to a wristwatch.

Each watch was sealed, baked, frozen, vibrated, pressurized, depressurized, and shocked. Crystals shattered. Hands fell off. Movements seized. The Speedmaster passed every test, and on 1 March 1965 was certified "flight-qualified for all manned space missions."

Buzz Aldrin's personal Speedmaster — Reference 105.012, the watch on his wrist on 21 July 1969 — was shipped to the Smithsonian shortly after the mission and lost in transit. A racing chronograph
that never stopped.

The original Speedmaster (Reference CK2915) was designed by Claude Baillod in 1957 for sports-car drivers; its tachymeter bezel was an industry first. Sixty-eight years later it is the only watch — of any kind, from any manufacturer — still in continuous production from the year it was certified by NASA.

The Making

One hundred and ten hours, by hand, in Biel.

Every Speedmaster Professional is assembled by hand at Omega's manufacture in Biel, Switzerland — a five-story facility on the banks of the Schüss, in operation since 1880. The 3861 caliber takes one hundred and ten hours of skilled assembly time, then eight additional days inside METAS' sealed magnetic chambers, before it can be cased.

The case is forged from a single billet of 316L stainless steel. The dial is lacquered black, fired, then printed with calibrated white indices. The hands are cut, polished by hand, and filled with Super-LumiNova. The bracelet is assembled link by link.

At seven thousand dollars the modern Speedmaster Professional is, quietly, one of the best values in luxury watchmaking. METAS certification alone — the eight-day testing, the magnetic chamber, the +5/-0 second tolerance — typically commands a premium of two to three thousand dollars on any other reference. Add to that a hand-assembled Co-Axial movement, a sapphire-on-sapphire case, and a five-year international warranty.

Add to that, finally, the only literal value that cannot be added to anything else: this is the watch that went to the moon. NASA's certification of this exact model — same case, same caliber lineage, same name — has been continuously renewed since 1965. No other watch on any wrist can say that.
