Ulysse Nardin · Marine · Chronometer Manufacture · Ref 1186-122/42 · new on Amazon

A ship’s chronometer for the wrist, in rose gold.

Ulysse Nardin made the marine chronometers that navies navigated by from 1846 into the 1970s, and the Marine Chronometer is the wristwatch version of that instrument: a 43mm rose gold case with a fluted bezel, a white dial with Roman numerals, the power reserve at twelve and the small seconds with the date at six, and the in-house UN-118 movement with its diamond-coated silicon escapement. New from an independent dealer through Amazon.

From the ship to the wrist

Before satellites, a ship found its longitude with a marine chronometer, a clock accurate enough that the difference between its time and local noon gave the distance east or west of Greenwich. Ulysse Nardin of Le Locle supplied those chronometers to more than fifty navies, and the Marine Chronometer wristwatch borrows the layout: a power reserve at twelve so you know how much running time is left, and the seconds at six.

The UN-118 inside is the first movement Ulysse Nardin built entirely in-house, with an escapement of silicon coated in synthetic diamond, which needs no lubrication, and a silicon balance spring. It is certified by the Swiss chronometer office, COSC.

What the listing gets wrong

The Amazon table calls this a chronograph and says it is battery powered. Neither is true: the Marine Chronometer Manufacture is an automatic three-hander with a power reserve indicator and a date. The reference in the title, the photograph and the dial, which reads Certified Chronometer, are the guide.

Every figure here comes from the Amazon spec table where it is right and from Ulysse Nardin’s published specification for the reference, not from handling the watch. Two hundred metres of water resistance is unusual on a gold dress watch and is the marine heritage showing.

Buying it new on Amazon

This unit is listed new by an independent dealer through Amazon, with Amazon’s 30-day return window on top of the dealer’s warranty; read the warranty line on the listing, because Ulysse Nardin’s own warranty runs from an authorised sale.

Gold Ulysse Nardins resell below their retail price on the secondary market, which is why dealer stock sits on Amazon under boutique retail. Buy it for the movement and the story. Nothing here is investment advice.

Verdict

The wristwatch descendant of the navy’s chronometers, in rose gold with an in-house silicon movement, new from a dealer.

Strengths

  • In-house UN-118 with a diamond-coated silicon escapement, COSC
  • Power reserve at twelve, seconds and date at six: the chronometer layout
  • 200m on a gold dress watch
  • New, with Amazon’s return window

Trade-offs

  • Gold Ulysse Nardins resell below retail
  • 43mm in gold is a heavy watch
  • Dealer warranty, not Ulysse Nardin’s from purchase
  • The Amazon table is wrong about chronograph and battery; go by the reference

Buy it if

Someone who wants a maritime story and an in-house movement from a house that is not Rolex or Omega.

Skip it if

You want a smaller watch, steel, or resale value.

FAQ

No. It is an automatic three-hander with a power reserve indicator and a date. The Amazon table’s chronograph and battery entries are listing errors.
