Is sapphire crystal worth it?
For a watch you wear regularly, sapphire crystal is usually worth it. Sapphire rates about 9 on the Mohs hardness scale (roughly 2,000 Vickers) versus 5–6 for mineral glass, so it resists virtually every scratch you encounter in daily life.
The hardness gap is large
Sapphire crystal is synthetic corundum — crystalline aluminium oxide — rating about 9 Mohs, second only to diamond at 10. Mineral glass rates only 5–6 Mohs, which means it scratches from contact with everyday grit and sand, since airborne quartz dust is about 7 Mohs.
The Mohs scale is ordinal, not linear, so the step from mineral (6) to sapphire (9) represents a dramatic increase in hardness, not a modest one. In practice sapphire shrugs off keys, desk edges, and door frames that would mark mineral glass.
The trade-offs
Sapphire is hard but more brittle than acrylic, so a sharp impact on an edge can chip or shatter it, whereas soft acrylic (Hesalite) tends to deform and can be polished. Sapphire is also reflective, so most quality sapphire crystals add an anti-reflective coating — coating the underside is more durable than coating both sides.
The Omega Speedmaster famously still offers a Hesalite (acrylic) crystal option on its Moonwatch for heritage reasons, precisely because acrylic resists shattering — a reminder that "harder" is not universally "better."
