What is lume, and why does it glow poorly on some watches?

Lume is a photoluminescent pigment, most commonly Super-LumiNova, painted onto hands and hour markers that absorbs ambient light and slowly re-emits it as a glow in the dark. Cheap watches often glow poorly not because the pigment itself is inferior, but because less of it is applied, applied thinly, or applied only to the hands and not the full set of hour markers.

How it actually works

Modern lume is a strontium aluminate-based pigment (Super-LumiNova is the best-known brand) that charges under any light source — daylight, a lamp, a UV torch — and releases that stored energy as visible glow over hours, fading gradually rather than switching off. Older watches used radium or tritium, which glowed via radioactivity rather than charging, and are no longer used for safety reasons, though vintage pieces may still contain them.

Glow brightness and duration depend on pigment thickness and coverage — a thick, generous application glows brighter and longer than a thin dusting, independent of which brand of pigment is used.

Why budget watches often glow weakly

Cost-cutting typically shows up as thinner lume application, lume on the hands only with unlumed or minimally lumed hour markers, or lower-grade pigment mixed with more filler. A full lume job — thick pigment on both hands and every hour marker — costs more to apply and is a genuine differentiator between an inexpensive field watch and a proper tool watch.

A rough rule of thumb: hold a watch under a bright lamp for 30 seconds, then check the glow after 2–3 hours in a dark room — a well-lumed watch is still clearly readable; a poorly-lumed one has faded to near nothing.
