Why the nickname
Enthusiasts call the AE1200 the Casio Royale, a play on a certain film title, because its octagonal silver-tone case with four corner buttons resembles a screen prop more than a budget watch. The name has stuck and is now how most people search for it.
The case is resin finished to look like brushed metal, not metal. That keeps the watch at about 39 grams, and keeps it cheap to replace when the finish wears through at the corners, which on a resin case it eventually will.
