Forty millimetres

Orient built the Mako 40 for the wrists its other divers overwhelmed. The case is 40mm across, 46.5mm lug to lug and 12.8mm thick, with 20mm lugs. The Kamasu on this site is 41.8mm and 46.8mm; the numbers are close, but the Mako 40 is the one that sits inside a cuff.

It keeps everything that made the Kamasu the budget benchmark: a flat sapphire crystal, a 200m rating, a unidirectional steel bezel, and a sunburst green dial with luminous markers and a date at 3.

No crown guards

The case has no crown guards. The crown sits exposed at 3 o’clock, which gives the Mako 40 a cleaner, simpler case profile than most divers. It is a small design choice with a large effect on how the watch reads on the wrist.

Inside is an Orient in-house automatic that winds by hand, hacks, and carries a stated 40-hour reserve on 22 jewels at 21,600 vibrations per hour. Orient makes its own calibers rather than buying them in, at every price it sells at.

Strap or bracelet

Orient’s own page for reference RA-AC0Q11E describes a green rubber strap, and the Amazon listing this page links to says the same in its title. The product image on this page shows a steel bracelet. We have not found a documented bracelet variant under this reference, so we do not tell you which one arrives.

Check the listing photos and the item details before you order. The case, crystal, rating and movement are the same either way, and every figure here comes from Orient’s published page and specs.json rather than from a unit we have handled.

Verdict

The compact Orient diver: sapphire, 200m and an in-house automatic in a 40mm guard-free case, with a strap question to settle before you buy.

Strengths

  • Sapphire crystal and a 200m rating at 40mm
  • Orient in-house automatic, hand-winding and hacking
  • No crown guards, so a cleaner and slimmer profile
  • Sunburst green dial with a simple date

Trade-offs

  • Strap versus bracelet is unresolved on this listing
  • Still 12.8mm thick, the same as the Kamasu
  • Caliber number differs between our catalogue and Orient
  • Date only, no day, if that matters to you

Buy it if

A smaller wrist that wants a real automatic diver with sapphire and does not want to size up to 42mm.

Skip it if

You need the steel bracelet confirmed, or you want the Kamasu’s day-date.
