Seiko · 5 Sports GMT · Ref SSK001
Two time zones. One real GMT hand.
The SSK001 put a genuine GMT into the 5 Sports case in 2022. Caliber 4R34 drives an independent 24-hour hand under a red-and-blue rotating bezel, on a five-row bracelet, with a day-date window and 100m of water resistance.

How the 4R34 works
The 4R34 has an independently adjustable 24-hour hand. Pull the crown to the first position and that hand moves on its own, without disturbing the hour, minute or seconds hands. Set it to a second time zone, then read a third against the rotating 24-hour bezel. Enthusiasts call this arrangement a caller GMT; the flyer type, where the local hour hand jumps instead, costs far more.
It is a Seiko in-house automatic at 21,600 vibrations per hour on 24 jewels with a stated 41-hour reserve. It hacks and hand-winds. The Hardlex crystal carries a magnifier over the day-date window at three.

The Pepsi bezel
The bezel is split red for daytime hours and blue for night, with a 24-hour scale under a Hardlex insert. Set the red arrow hand to a second time zone and read it against the bezel. The colourway is the one collectors call Pepsi, borrowed from the classic GMT-Master pattern.
The dial underneath is black with cream-lumed markers and a red arrow tip on the GMT hand, so the second zone is the first thing you see.

Size, honestly
Seiko lists 42.5mm across and 13.6mm thick. The five-row Jubilee-style bracelet spreads the weight, and the crown sits at four o’clock, but this is a large watch and a thick one. Try a 42mm watch you already own against it before buying.
Water resistance is 100m with a screw-down crown. That covers swimming. It is not a dive watch and the bezel is a 24-hour scale, not a dive scale.

Verdict
The most-recommended mechanical GMT under four figures, because the 24-hour hand is real and the rest of the watch is a Seiko 5 Sports.
Strengths
- Independent 24-hour GMT hand on Seiko’s in-house 4R34
- Rotating 24-hour Pepsi bezel makes a third zone readable
- Day and date, 100m, screw-down crown, exhibition caseback
- Five-row Jubilee-style bracelet included
Trade-offs
- 42.5mm and 13.6mm thick wears large
- Hardlex crystal and bezel insert, not sapphire and ceramic
- 41-hour reserve is short next to Swiss 80-hour movements
- A caller-style GMT: the local hour hand does not jump independently
Buy it if
A traveller or a GMT-curious buyer who wants the real complication without stepping up to a four-figure Swiss GMT.
Skip it if
You want a watch under 40mm, a dressier case, or a true flyer GMT with a jumping local hour hand.
FAQ
It has a genuinely independent 24-hour hand driven by the in-house 4R34, so it tracks a second time zone on the hand and a third against the rotating bezel. The local hour hand is not the one that jumps, which makes it a caller-style GMT rather than a flyer.
