What the band buys
A mechanical movement. That is the headline. The 7S26 is a self-winding Seiko automatic on 21 jewels at 21,600 vibrations per hour, with a stated reserve of about 41 hours, and Seiko has produced it in enormous numbers for decades. Parts are everywhere and any watchmaker knows it.
It also buys a 37mm stainless steel case, a Hardlex crystal, a black sunburst dial with applied markers, a day-date window and a five-link Jubilee-style bracelet. Nothing about that list is luxurious. All of it is real.
Two things it will not do
The 7S26 has no hand-winding and no hacking. You cannot top it up with the crown; you wear it or you shake it. And the seconds hand keeps moving while you set the time, so you cannot sync it to the second.
Those are the two limitations that separate the 7S26 from the newer 4R36 in the 5 Sports line. They are also the only ones that matter, and for a first automatic most people never notice.
37mm
Thirty-seven millimetres is small by current standards and exactly right by older ones. It sits flat under a cuff, the 18mm bracelet keeps it light, and it reads as a dress watch even though Seiko 5 is a sports line on paper.
Water resistance is 30m. That is rain and hand washing, not swimming. Seiko no longer lists the SNKL23, so figures come from enthusiast and retailer sources that agree with our catalogue. No unit has been measured for this page.
