The panda look
A panda dial is a light dial with dark sub-dials, named for the obvious reason. It comes from racing chronographs and it has never gone out of fashion, which is why the mechanical ones cost what they do.
The SSB427 does it in white and blue. Two blue counters, silver baton markers, silver hands, a blue tachymeter ring around the outside and a date near four thirty. The bracelet is brushed with polished bevels and closes with a three-fold push-button clasp.
Caliber 8T63
Seiko’s 8T63 is a quartz chronograph. It times to a fifth of a second for up to sixty minutes, runs a 24-hour indicator and a date, and Seiko rates its battery at roughly three years. Quartz is why the watch is thin for a chronograph at 12.1mm, and why it costs what it does.
One thing to know before you buy: the dial print on this Seiko line reads like chronograph automatic wording. The movement is quartz. Seiko’s own page says so, and so does our catalogue.
Reading a tachymeter
The bezel scale converts elapsed time over a known distance into speed. Start the chronograph at a mile marker, stop it at the next, and the number the seconds hand points to on the bezel is your average speed in miles per hour. It is a racing-dashboard idea that survives on watches as a look.
Seiko lists 41.5mm across, 46.5mm lug to lug and 133g on the bracelet. Water resistance is 10 bar, which covers swimming but not pressing the pushers underwater.
