TAG Heuer · Carrera Chronograph 44 · Calibre 16 · ceramic bezel · on Amazon

The Carrera Calibre 16 at 44mm. Ceramic bezel, day and date.

This is the racing Carrera in its most familiar form: a 44mm steel case with a black ceramic tachymeter bezel, a black dial with three white-ringed counters, red accents on the hands and a day and date window at three, on the steel H-link bracelet. Inside is the Calibre 16, TAG Heuer’s automatic chronograph on the ETA 7750 base, with about 48 hours of reserve, and the case is rated to 100 metres. It is the Carrera you see on the most wrists, and it is sold on Amazon by a marketplace dealer at TAG Heuer’s own price.

The everyday racing chronograph

The Carrera is Heuer’s racing chronograph of 1963, designed by Jack Heuer for drivers who needed to read a chronograph at a glance: a clean dial, big counters and the minute track pushed out to the flange so nothing gets in the way. TAG Heuer has made it in every size and movement since, and the current line splits into the 44mm sport chronographs with the tachymeter bezel and the smaller glassbox watches that look back at the 1960s.

The Calibre 16 Carrera is the one TAG Heuer sells most of: a 7750-based automatic chronograph, which means a cam rather than a column wheel and about 48 hours of reserve, but also decades of proven reliability and cheap servicing anywhere. This 44mm version adds the black ceramic bezel, which does not scratch, and the day-date window at three that the 7750 makes easy. The red accents are the Carrera’s racing tell.

Reading the listing

The listing’s title is just the brand; the model row carries the full reference, CBN2A1AA.BA0643, and the dealer’s description lists the black dial, steel case and bracelet, automatic movement, tang clasp and 44mm. TAG Heuer lists a folding clasp for this reference, and the copy uses TAG Heuer’s. The photograph shows the ceramic bezel, the counters, the red accents and the day-date. The Calibre 16, reserve, 100 metres and steel caseback are TAG Heuer’s published specifications for the reference; the ETA 7750 base is the published basis of the Calibre 16.

The dealer is World Of Watches, a marketplace dealer, and the rows we read do not state whether the watch is new with TAG Heuer’s warranty; ask, and ask for the box and card. Nothing here was measured on the watch.

Buying it on Amazon

This is a regular Amazon listing from a marketplace seller with Amazon’s 30-day return window; it is not a Luxury Stores pre-owned unit and the seller has not published a condition. The second button opens the live search for Carreras in case this one has sold.

Carreras have resold for under new and close to what pre-owned buyers paid, sometimes more, sometimes less; that is a pattern, not a promise, and nothing here is investment advice.

Verdict

The 44mm Carrera Calibre 16 with the black ceramic bezel and day-date on the bracelet, on Amazon from a marketplace dealer at TAG Heuer’s price with the reference on the listing.

Strengths

  • Black ceramic tachymeter bezel; does not scratch
  • Day and date at three
  • Calibre 16: proven, serviceable anywhere
  • Reference on the listing; Amazon’s return window

Trade-offs

  • Condition and warranty not stated by the dealer; ask
  • Calibre 16 is an ETA 7750 base with about 48 hours, not the in-house 80-hour movement
  • 44mm; a big watch
  • Dealer’s clasp description disagrees with TAG Heuer’s

FAQ

TAG Heuer’s name for its automatic chronograph on the ETA 7750 base: cam-actuated, 28,800 vph, about 48 hours of reserve. Robust and easy to service; the in-house Heuer 02 / TH20-00 in the pricier Carreras has a column wheel and 80 hours.
