Sapphire vs mineral vs acrylic crystal: what is the real difference?

The three common watch crystal materials trade hardness for toughness in opposite directions: sapphire (about 9 on the Mohs scale) resists nearly all scratches but can chip on a hard impact; mineral glass (5–6 Mohs) scratches more easily but resists shattering better; acrylic (about 2.5 Mohs) scratches the easiest of all but is the most shatter-resistant and can be buffed back to clarity.

Hardness versus toughness

Mohs hardness measures scratch resistance, not impact resistance, and the two do not move together. Sapphire is synthetic corundum at roughly 9 Mohs (second only to diamond), so it shrugs off sand, keys, and desk edges that would mark softer materials — but its rigidity also makes it more prone to chipping or cracking under a sharp direct hit, especially on an edge.

Mineral glass sits in the middle at 5–6 Mohs — enough to survive gentle daily handling but not airborne grit (quartz dust is around 7 Mohs), while being noticeably more shatter-resistant than sapphire. Acrylic (Hesalite/Plexiglas) is soft, around 2.5 Mohs, so it picks up fine scratches easily, but it deforms rather than shatters and can be polished back to clear with basic buffing compound.

Polishability and where each is used

Acrylic is uniquely repairable at home — light scratches buff out in minutes. Mineral glass can sometimes be polished but far less reliably. Sapphire essentially cannot be polished by hand; a scratch (a rare event) usually means replacing the crystal.

This is why some tool and heritage watches, most famously the Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch, still offer acrylic: it survives shock without shattering and is trivially repaired in the field, which matters more than scratch resistance for certain use cases.
