Short answer: the best watch brands under $500 are Seiko, Citizen, Orient, Casio (G-Shock), Bulova and Timex. Seiko and Citizen build their own automatic movements and also make Eco-Drive and solar quartz; Orient is part of the Seiko group and puts in-house automatics and sapphire crystals into watches around $250 to $350; Casio's G-Shock line is the toughest watch for the money; Bulova is owned by Citizen and uses Citizen's Miyota automatics; Timex makes the cheapest good watches on this list. Our first pick from each brand: the Seiko 5 Sports 5KX (about $285), the Citizen Tsuyosa (about $332), the Orient Mako 40 (about $260), the G-Shock CasiOak (about $144) and the Bulova Surveyor (about $315); for Timex, the Q Timex Reissue (about $140). 📋 How We Chose These Watches

We only list a brand if our database contains at least one of its watches priced under $500, and we picked each brand's representative from those watches. Every spec quoted on this page (movement, crystal, water resistance, case size, power reserve) is copied from that watch's spec sheet, which also feeds the comparison table and each watch page. Prices are typical Amazon prices when we last checked and change often. We left out fashion brands that put generic quartz movements in branded cases.

Pick 1 of 5

Best Seiko

Seiko 5 Sports 5KX

$250–$500

MSRP

⌀ 42.5mm⚙ Automatic Caliber 4R36💧 100m (10 ATM)◈ Hardlex Crystal

Why We Picked It

The Seiko 5 Sports 5KX is the watch most people mean when they say Seiko under $500: a 42.5mm steel sports watch with a rotating bezel, day-date, 100m water resistance and Seiko's in-house 4R36 automatic, for about $285. It shows why Seiko is the default answer at this price.

Strengths

  • ✓Seiko in-house 4R36 automatic, 41-hour power reserve
  • ✓100m water resistance
  • ✓Day and date display with a rotating bezel
  • ✓A widely used movement that is easy to service

Trade-offs

  • —Hardlex crystal, not sapphire
  • —42.5mm case wears large on small wrists
  • —An automatic is less accurate than quartz

Pick 2 of 5

Best Citizen

Citizen Tsuyosa Automatic

$250–$500

MSRP

⌀ 40mm⚙ Automatic Caliber 8210💧 50m (5 ATM)◈ Sapphire Crystal with Cyclops

Why We Picked It

The Citizen Tsuyosa pairs Citizen's in-house 8210 automatic with a sapphire crystal and an integrated bracelet for about $332. It is the clearest example of Citizen giving you more hardware than its rivals at the same price.

Strengths

  • ✓Sapphire crystal (with date cyclops)
  • ✓Citizen 8210 automatic, 40-hour power reserve
  • ✓40mm stainless steel case and integrated bracelet
  • ✓Wide choice of bright dial colours

Trade-offs

  • —50m water resistance: fine for swimming, not a dive watch
  • —If you want solar instead, look at the Citizen Garrison
  • —Popular colours sell out and prices move around

Pick 3 of 5

Best Orient

Orient Mako 40 Green

$250–$500

MSRP

⌀ 40mm⚙ Automatic Caliber F6722💧 200m (20 ATM)◈ Sapphire Crystal

Why We Picked It

The Orient Mako 40 sums up why Orient belongs on this list: a sapphire crystal, 200m water resistance and Orient's in-house F6722 automatic for about $260. Few brands match that combination at this price.

Strengths

  • ✓Sapphire crystal
  • ✓200m water resistance
  • ✓Orient F6722 automatic, 40-hour power reserve
  • ✓40mm case fits small and medium wrists

Trade-offs

  • —Orient's dealer network is smaller than Seiko's or Citizen's
  • —Bracelet is functional rather than refined
  • —Fewer aftermarket parts than the Seiko divers

Pick 4 of 5

Best Casio (G-Shock)

Casio G-Shock GA-B2100 CasiOak

MSRP

⌀ 45.4mm (48.5mm lug-to-lug, 11.9mm thick)⚙ Quartz Module 5689 (Tough Solar + Bluetooth)💧 200m (20 ATM)◈ Mineral Glass

Why We Picked It

The G-Shock CasiOak shows Casio at its best: G-Shock shock resistance, 200m water resistance, Tough Solar charging and Bluetooth time-sync in a slim octagonal case for about $144. If you want a watch you never have to think about, start with Casio.

Strengths

  • ✓G-Shock shock resistance
  • ✓200m water resistance
  • ✓Tough Solar with Bluetooth time-sync (module 5689)
  • ✓11.9mm thick: slim for a G-Shock

Pick 5 of 5

Best Bulova

Bulova Surveyor Automatic

$250–$500

MSRP

⌀ 39mm⚙ Automatic Miyota 8215💧 30m (3 ATM)◈ Sapphire Crystal

Why We Picked It

The Bulova Surveyor is the dressiest pick here: a blue sunburst dial, a sapphire crystal and a Miyota 8215 automatic in a 39mm steel case for about $315. It is the reason to choose Bulova over Seiko if you want sapphire on a dress-leaning automatic.

Strengths

  • ✓Sapphire crystal
  • ✓Miyota 8215 automatic, 42-hour power reserve
  • ✓39mm case with dress-watch proportions
  • ✓Blue sunburst dial on a steel bracelet

Trade-offs

  • —30m water resistance: avoid swimming
  • —Bulova's range under $500 is smaller than Seiko's or Citizen's
  • —A dress-leaning watch: not built for rough wear

Buying Guide

How to choose between the brands. Seiko: the widest range under $500, from the Seiko 5 SNKL23 (7S26 automatic, about $149) through the Seiko 5 Sports 5KX (4R36 automatic, 100m) to the Presage Cocktail Time (4R35 automatic, about $399); Seiko's weak spot at this price is Hardlex crystal instead of sapphire. Citizen: the best choice if you want no battery changes, thanks to Eco-Drive solar (the Garrison runs about 6 months on a full charge and costs about $135), plus the Tsuyosa automatic with a sapphire crystal. Orient: the most specification for the money in an automatic; the Mako 40 and Kamasu both pair a sapphire crystal with 200m water resistance. Casio: G-Shock shock resistance and 200m water resistance from the DW-5600 (about $95) up, and Pro Trek solar outdoor watches. Bulova: dressier automatics with sapphire crystals, such as the Surveyor. Timex: honest, inexpensive watches such as the Q Timex Reissue (quartz, 38mm, 50m, acrylic crystal, about $140) and the Marlin automatic (Miyota 8205, 40mm). As a rule, buy quartz or solar under about $200 for accuracy and low upkeep, and an automatic from Seiko, Citizen, Orient or Bulova above that if you want a mechanical watch. Frequently Asked Questions

Seiko, Citizen, Orient, Casio (G-Shock), Bulova and Timex. Seiko and Citizen make their own automatic movements; Orient is part of the Seiko group and often fits sapphire crystals around $250 to $350; Casio G-Shock is the toughest watch for the money; Bulova is owned by Citizen and uses Miyota automatics with sapphire crystals; Timex makes good inexpensive quartz watches. Our picks: Seiko 5 Sports 5KX (about $285), Citizen Tsuyosa (about $332), Orient Mako 40 (about $260), G-Shock CasiOak (about $144), Bulova Surveyor (about $315) and Q Timex Reissue (about $140).

Seiko and Citizen, because they design and build their own. Seiko's 4R35 and 4R36 hack and hand-wind; Citizen's 8210 powers the Tsuyosa. Orient, part of the Seiko group, uses its own F6722 and F6922 calibers. Bulova uses Citizen's Miyota movements, such as the 8215 in the Surveyor.

Both are excellent. Choose Seiko for the widest choice of automatics, from the Seiko 5 SNKL23 (about $149) to the Presage Cocktail Time (about $399). Choose Citizen for Eco-Drive solar watches that never need a battery change, such as the Garrison (about $135), or for a sapphire crystal on an automatic, such as the Tsuyosa (about $332).

In our database: Citizen (Tsuyosa), Orient (Mako 40 and Kamasu) and Bulova (Surveyor) all offer sapphire crystals under $500. Most Seiko models at this price use Hardlex, Seiko's hardened mineral glass.

Usually not. Fashion brands often put generic quartz movements in branded cases, so most of the price pays for the logo. For the same money Seiko, Citizen, Orient, Casio, Bulova and Timex give you a proven movement and better water resistance.
